General Funding Information
The Avon Breast Health Outreach Program provides financial support in the form of grants to community-based programs that conduct outreach, provide breast cancer education and link medically underserved women to clinical screening services.
The Avon Foundation for Women has funded community-based programs designed to improve utilization of regular breast cancer screening by at-risk, underserved populations since 1993. Despite improvements in the availability of free and low-cost screening services supported through programs such as the National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program (NBCCEDP), disparities in utilization of mammography persist.
Funding is awarded to organizations implementing a program that provides education and information on breast health and breast cancer, and helps women access medical providers, ensuring that women in need obtain breast cancer screening and any follow-up care they may require. Small community-based organizations are encouraged to apply.
Avon BHOP will seek to support programs that:
- Recruit women for both first-time and annual screenings;
- Develop partnerships between community-based outreach providers and local medical providers;
- Work with healthcare providers to ensure proper clinical follow-up of abnormal screening results;
- Educate older women about Medicare coverage of annual screening mammograms, and assist them in obtaining the service from providers who accept Medicare.
