I believe
the UT Medical Center Mobile Mammography Unit saved my life. I
live twelve miles up a mountain on a winding, rough road and
have no health insurance, so I would never have gone for a
mammogram. I would not have found my breast cancer so early if
it the mobile unit hadn’t come to my community to provide free
screenings. Ten years later, at age 55, I’m enjoying time with
my 7-year-old grandson and counting my blessings each day.
Having breast cancer changed my outlook on life. I am very
grateful and happy to be alive. When I was growing up,
preventative medicine wasn’t heard of—when it came to our
health, we fixed what was broken. Now I know how important it is
to teach women about early screening for breast cancer.
