“Diagnosed with breast
cancer at 41 years old! It can’t be happening to me.”
Karen’s friend had been encouraging her for a year to have a
mammogram. Karen, an uninsured 41-year-old mother of three who
was busy caring for an ailing grandfather, finally followed
through and was screened at the Healthy Woman Partnership. Her
instinct told her that something was wrong, and she was
correct—she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Karen was angry
and afraid, but her fears became lessened when she realized that
people were there to help her navigate through the medical
system. A case manager helped her apply for Medicaid, and Karen
is now on her way to survivorship. She feels very grateful to
have access to a breast cancer screening program that assists
the uninsured.
