Linda, whose mother was a breast cancer survivor, knew she was at increased risk for the disease. She kept putting off going to the doctor because she felt she knew what they were gong to tell her. A friend handed her an ‘Early Detection Works’ brochure and urged her to go.

After the initial screening and biopsy, she was diagnosed with breast cancer, but, luckily, at an early stage, needing only a lumpectomy. Linda recently finished her chemotherapy regimen and credites her successful treatment to the early detection program.

Linda advises every woman to get screened, even if they are hesitant.

FAQ's

Funding Questions

Q. I’m on your site and I can't find the Application Kit, where is it?

A.  Instructions for obtaining the RFA Application Kit are located within the Funding Guidelines page.

Q. When will the application for 2009 funding be released?

A.   The Avon Foundation Breast Care Fund 2009 RFA was released in July of 2008, see the Funding Guidelines page.

Q. How can I get on your mailing list?

A.   Please e-mail (link to e-mail) your name, the name of your organization, the address of your organization, telephone number and email address to admin@avonbreastcare.org.

Q. Do governmental agencies fall within your guidelines?

A.  Only if the organization is state funded.  If the organization is federally funded, it needs to partner with a community-based organization and make IT the primary institution of The Fund.

Q. How do I download Acrobat Reader?

A.  Click on the link called “Get Acrobat reader” located within the Funding Guidelines page of our site.  Once the Adobe page comes up, click on “go to download.”  Downloading should begin automatically and should not take more than 10 minutes.  Be sure to save it in your present location, NOT on to a disk.  You will know it is fully installed when there is an “Adobe Reader 8” icon on your desktop.

Q. Can the money from your grant be used toward a mobile clinic or mobile mammography unit?

A.   Several of the presently funded projects use mobile vans or units.  It is a good way of reaching women who would normally find the clinic too far away to reach.  The monies, however, CANNOT be used toward the purchase, restoration, or maintenance of a van or mobile unit.  You can use your AFBCF grant to support outreach and education staff working with the mobile clinic.

Q. My organization applied for the current Funding cycle and was rejected; I would like to know the reason behind the decision. Where can I access that type of information?

A.   You can contact the Avon Foundation Breast Care Fund at 212-244-5368 or your can email us requesting feedback at admin@avonbreastcare.org.

A.  NO.  The AVON Foundation sponsors a program with CancerCare called AVONcares; this program provides limited financial assistance for transportation to and from treatment, childcare/eldercare for those undergoing treatment and an escort to and from treatment. Another program through CancerCare, Linking A.R.M.S. provides limited financial assistance for hormonal or oral chemotherapy, anti-nausea and pain medication, lymphedema supplies and durable medical equipment. To find out more information about these programs and to access their application form (in English and Spanish) please visit: http://www.cancercare.org/get_help/assistance/cc_financial.php. Q. I heard about your program and would like to enroll for a free or low cost  Breast Cancer Screening.  How do I go about doing that?

A.  You can locate the program closest to you, by entering the Funded Programs page on our site.  If there are no AFBCF grantees in your state located near you may contact your local CDC Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program. Please visit http://apps.nccd.cdc.gov/cancercontacts/nbccedp/contacts.asp to contact your state office.

Avon Products Question

Q. I’m having a Breast Cancer Awareness Day; can I place an order for Free Flyers?

A.   You can contact your local Avon Sales representative by calling 1-800-FOR-AVON and invite her to attend an event, where she can sell Pink Ribbon Products to raise funds for the cause and distribute the Breast Health Resource Guide.  These educational brochures may also be purchased through an Avon Representative at a minimal cost of $.50 for a pack of ten, or can be downloaded for free at http://www.avoncompany.com/women/avoncrusade/resource_guide.html. The Guide is available in English and Spanish.

Q. If I place a bulk order for Pink Ribbon Products can I have a discount on the price?

A. Since the money that is generated from these products goes directly toward our cause, AVON does not reduce the price on these items.  The purchase of each item is a charitable donation.
